Your backyard just got a little bigger!

If you are new to Fairwood Park, or perhaps even new to Spokane in general, one of the best parts of our neighborhood is the natural areas that surround us!

With Riverfront Park right next door to us along with hiking trails like Painted Rocks along Rural Route 5 and Waikiki Springs, getting outside has never been easier for the neighbors in Fairwood Park.

We live right next door to an expansive natural reserve area called Waikiki Springs. To access this trail all you need to do is head north on Fairwood drive until you come to the end of the road where you will see apartments to your right, the Bozarth mansion to your left, and some duplexes in front of you. If you follow that road you will see the beginnings of a trail we call "The switchbacks"

This trail was recently renovated last fall by Spokane parks and wildlife to allow access to the beautiful surroundings and little Spokane river. Many new to the neighborhood have NO idea this trail exists and how easy it is to go explore nature, the river, and even a wonderful hidden waterfall right here in our back yard!

When you get to the bottom of the switchback trials you will see a pumphouse for the county as well as the option to go right or left. Both directions are great!

If you go left, you will want to follow the yellow painted feet and paw tracks to get to the start of the Waikiki Springs trail and start heading towards the little Spokane river and bridge.

In the summer you will find lots of kids swimming, people fishing, and on the other side of the bridge, there is wonderful new trails that you can explore for miles. Most of this land is public and a blast to hike though, but please be respectful of personal property and the homes which are always clearly marked. Also please be sure to pick up after yourselves! There is a garbage can at the top of the switchbacks.

If you go right you will want to stick to the narrow trail that leads you down towards the river and to a small stream. If you keep going past the small stream which normally has a few boards to help you pass, you will find a bigger stream. From here if you follow the water up stream you will come across one of my favorite places in our area, an incredible waterfall! If you follow the water down stream you will find where it joins the little spokane river and is a fantastic more private swim spot.

Not only can you capture some great pictures down here, you can enjoy a picnic or play with your kids and dogs to escape the summer heat!

Now get out and do some exploring and please have fun, but be responsible and keep our wild backyard clean!
